I don’t want to alarm you, but the Queens Birthday long weekend is the last long weekend in Victoria until Cup Day. AKA Spring racing and a significant change in season. So even though it’s looking like a top of just double digits all weekend across the state, get out there and make the most of not having to see your boss on Monday. So what are you doing this long weekend? No plans? Some hot tips that might tickle your fancy below.
Not cold enough? Road trip to one of the colder parts of the state, Bendigo.
Bendigo Art Gallery is playing host in an Australian exclusive, a large-scale exhibition highlighting the history and relevance of the world-renowned textile company, Marimekko. This exhibition, Marimekko: Design Icon 1951 to 2018 traces Marimekko’s meteoric rise from the 1950s to the present and explores the dualities that define its aesthetic. This weekend is it’s last stop on its global tour before returning to Helsinki. Tickets to the exhibition are $15 and are available here.
Where to go? Head to the dog races (no, not what you think)
Done the art thing already? How about heading to Port Fairy for their annual sausage dog race. On Sunday June 10 this annual race sees a bunch of scurrying sausage dogs take centre stage in the race that paw-ses the nation in the annual Dachshund Dash. It all kicks off with the Dog’s Breakfast at 9.15am. All dog breeds are welcome to join the fun at the Village Green, which will offer an on-theme sausage sizzle, coffee carts, and the annual class photo of dogs and owners.
Come 10am, stroll down Sackville Street to the cricket oval (and the site for the day’s main event). The Dog Parade will be a chance for participating puppers to warm up, and for those of us having an ogle to get a few cute photos of the day’s competitors. Finally, settle in for some serious wiener action. Just try to keep up with those little legs during the two main races (for dogs under and over two years old, and a veterans race). Stick around though for the other fun races and competitions, including the ‘Dog Who Looks Most Like Their Owner’. If you’ve never been before, be prepared to experience true dachshund heaven.

Eat Winter Foods. How does a Pho Crawl sound?
Time Out published a list of the best noodle soups in Melbourne. Why not go try them all, I can count at least 10 meal times between Friday and Monday night suitable for a tasty broth based noodle dish. Nothing better when it’s cold out than some comfort food. More chilli, please.
Photos from Lanzhou Beef Noodle Bar (because their website and illustrations are rad, im so hungry now).
What to do? Light a fire.
I checked in with our buddies over at Home Camp, because if anyone knows how to light the perfect fire it’s going to be those who love spending more time outdoors than in. They say there are three things you need to get her cranking; Kindling, Tinder (no not the app, although that could be another wintery long weekend activity) and Fuelwood. You need kindling to get started, Tinder to really kick things off and Fuelwood to keep it going. All night long. But be careful kids, fires are best kept small and contained. It’s a fine art, but nothing better than being down the coast in winter with rain on a tin roof and the fire cranking. Need the lowdown on the perfect campfire for your weekend away then head over to Home Camp. Those marshmellows look good too.
Last but not least… Are You Staying home? Then do Some Online Shopping.
Yep, on the couch, on your phone. Let’s be honest. There is nothing good on TV and you’re already half way through that Netflix watch list. No jacket and no beanie needed, just turn up the heat and grab a blanket. Here’s my pick if you want to combine a winter home makeover with a bit of online shopping this weekend because its time to Bunker Down.
