Established in 2013, Tom Robertson Architects is a diverse team driven by a shared love of exceptional architecture. Led by Tom Robertson, the team is dedicated to an approach that is accessible and consultative, helping clients to refine their ideas and articulate what they love. Working with a restrained palette of natural materials, they find elegance in simplicity by employing refined design that is rooted in pragmatism and driven by beauty which is focused on creating enduring and contemporary architecture. We sat down Tom himself to get to know more about the team and their work. Here’s what he had to say.

1. When I was growing up, I wanted to be…
Anything, but an architect.
2. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your company?
We are a small studio based in Richmond – made up of 4. In the 5 years since the practice was created, we have created a range of houses, multi-residential developments, and boutique offices. Each of our projects has a strong focus on collaborating with clients and delivering a refined design.
3. How is your studio structured?
We are a studio of 4. Unlike some studious, each of our team members is involved in the design process. We typically provide complete services, including concept space planning, interior design and project management. All of the services are completed in-house – to ensure an efficient and thorough process.
4. What exciting projects (present or past) are you proud as punch about?
We are weeks away from completing our most exciting residential project – which is an intricate house in East Malvern. This combined with several new projects currently making their way through the planning process, 2019 looks to strengthen our portfolio further.
To date, we are most proud of our 2017 Holly Residences. These were a successful design outcome, but especially rewarding due to the challenges we faced throughout the process.
5. What’s the most treasured belonging/item in your own home?
Definitely my leather sofa.
6. What’s the most impressive party trick you can muster?
Zero. My worm days are long gone..
7. Are there any architectural trends you are excited about?
I’m excited about the idea of Less. A simplified design that doesn’t need to be adorned with unnecessary accessories. – Minimalism.
8. Tell us about a project that excited you but you never finished.
My house – ask me again in a few years..
9. What’s your go-to routine to shake off a busy week?
Dinner at Marion.
10. You’ve got a week off, where are you going?
Lorne – vino and cheese on the balcony after a few (very small) waves with dad. A slower life..
11. Tell us about your best strategy for those dreaded uninspired moments. What gets you out of slumpville and back climbing the creative pinnacle?
Collaboration. Getting the whole office involved in the design process elevates everyone and typically generates the most interesting outcome.
12. Favourite architectural style from a bygone era?
Brutalism.
