Matt Skinner is a sommelier, wine author, consultant and educator in all things wine. Yeah, we like wine here at Hunting for George. You may remember him from TV, that thing we used to watch before Netflix, on his series with Tobie Puttock called Tobie & Matt (thank me later). He’s not one to brag but Matt also co-founded the Fifteen Restaurant with Jamie Oliver and Tobie Puttock in a past life. His latest venture is one we have already sampled and have been waiting to visit again. The Drinks List is focussed on telling the story behind the wine you enjoy in everyday life. Lucy ordered a box, Jo ordered a box then Matt dropped off a box and guess what I can’t even take a photo because it’s all gone.
“The Drinks List is an online wine store dedicated to helping you drink better through fortnightly selections hand picked by Matt and some of Australia’s foremost experts. Zero compromise on quality and value, hassle free delivery anywhere in Australia. We like the sound of that.” Matt Skinner, The Drinks List.
The Drinks List isn’t the biggest or the cheapest, what it does bring to the table is a personal touch to an industry that has been fought over by retailers leaving the consumer somewhat satisfied but wondering what’s now missing. Ever walked into a warehouse with the biggest range of booze you ever did see only to walk around in circles and pick up a slab of Melbourne’s finest instead? Having been a part of the Prince Wine Store since 1996, Matt has again teamed up with Alex Wilcox and Michael McNamara from Prince again for story time. Stories about where the wine is from, stories from the winemakers, stories about what makes a good wine and how it’s best consumed.
I don’t know much about wine, just that it can taste good or bad, so I’ll leave it to these guys to explain. Start here: Wine 101, How to Taste Wine. Then go pick up 12 under $20 before they’re all gone.
“Value is everywhere; you just have to look for it. And in the wine world, more often that means getting off the beaten track and trying new things: think lesser wines from great producers, weird blends of grape varieties you possibly haven’t heard of before, and savvy imports from countries less explored. It’s all good. These are bulletproof recommendations, perfect for Tuesday nights in front of the telly, for backyard barbecues in the sun, and for sharing with anyone that happens to turn up at your place with an armful of sausages from your local Bunnings. We hope you love them as much as we do, and fingers crossed some even become part of your regular drinking repertoire!” Matt Skinner, The Drinks List.
