We take a look at another Houses Awards 2018 finalist with the Old Waratah Road House by Michael Chang and Bridget Crowe of 3Fold architecture. Set in Fish Creek, South Gippsland Victoria the home has an exterior and interior that beautifully exposes natural textures and raw materials. The timber cantilevered house connects to its site though split level planning and a gently raked roof-line. The bespoke interior is built almost entirely from hardwood reclaimed from houses due for demolition. Garden spaces flow around and between the house and deck-connected studio shed.
This home has earnt a finalist nomination in both the ‘Sustainability’ and ‘New House under 200m2’ category in this year’s Houses Award. So let’s take a closer look…
Michael from 3Fold is not your ‘typical’ designer. Having a rare combination of architectural training combined with practical building skills means he has a unique insight into the construction aspects of building a house. Bridget is trained in both architecture and horticulture and has a keen eye for landscape and interior detail.
“We spend much of our waking lives analysing the built environment to work out what makes a place special. Principles we follow are careful consideration of site, energy efficiency, effective use of space, and getting the best result possible within your budget.” Michael Chang and Bridget Crowe of 3Fold architecture.
Bridget’s horticulture training and keen eye for landscape are elaborately reflected through the hefty garden space flowing seamlessly around and in between the house.
The bespoke interiors are mainly composed of reclaimed hardwood and the history of which adds warmth and character to the space. Soft timber panels create nostalgia whilst black steel fixtures modernise the aesthetic, creating a balance of old soul and youthful energy. The kitchen overlooks the living room which is set off with exposed brick walls and black steel fireplace, creating a gravitating focal point.
Some walls introduce peeping margined windows that span from edge to edge, allowing plenty of natural light to stream into the interiors.
Whilst the kitchen is enough to make anyone swoon (cook or not!) this kitchen is spectacular, with a wide panning view across the gardens.
Congratulations to 3Fold architects on their 2018 Houses Award nomination for the Nulla House and Shed. The winners will be announced on July 27th in Sydney. I’ll be there waving the Hunting for George flag and will share the winners with you all very soon! Until then, here’s a look at some of the other finalists.
