With another NAIDOC week coming to a close I thought it only fitting to revisit one of my favourite local artists, Dan Sultan. Part Soul Singer, Part Rock’n’Roll Star & Part Folk Troubadour he may be, yet this Dreamboat remains quintessentially Australian & tenaciously proud of his Aboriginal heritage (beautifully demonstrated in this powerful portrait by artist, Jandamarra Cadd). Sultan has an innate ability to create vivid pictures with his songs & this one is no exception. ‘Nyul Nyul Girl’ comes from the soundtrack to the 2009 film, ‘Bran Nue Day’ and references the sadly now extinct Aboriginal dialect, spoken by the Nyulnyul people of Western Australia.
NAIDOC is an annual event held Australia-wide that celebrates the history, Culture & Achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Visit www.naidoc.org.au and check out some of the great NAIDOC week events happening in/around our wonderful city this weekend…
