We’ve got a truckload of big projects going on behind the scenes at Hunting for George and lots of exciting things to share with you over the coming months. We thought we’d kick things off and welcome our latest legend of an employee and shop guru, Alyssa.
Fresh from New Orleans, Alyssa joins the Hunting for George team after spending the past few years working in interior styling and event planning in the States. Moving to Australia in search of a new adventure, she was drawn to Melbourne with its unique architecture and design scene (lucky us!).
The first face you’ll see when you walk into the Hunting for George showroom and ready to answer all your home decor questions, we took ten with Alyssa so you could get to know her a little better. Check it out below.
1. Tell us a little bit about you!
I’m new to Melbourne, fresh from New Orleans. I’ve spent the past few years working in interior styling and event planning in the States and I recently moved to Australia in search of a new adventure. Melbourne appealed to me because of the architecture and design scene, but I’ve been equally blown away by little trips to the coast and through the small towns. Now I’m the face you see when you walk into the shop at Hunting for George, here to answer all your home decor questions in person.
1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I’d love to say I had big dreams of working with Doctors Without Borders or the Peace Corps, something smart and impactful. But I actually had this funny obsession with eggs as a young kid and wanted desperately to either be an egg or be a frying pan so I could cook eggs. Totally normal, right? Somewhere around my early pre-teen years I started picking up interiors and fashion magazines and I haven’t given up my love of great design since.
2. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“Show up. Dive in. Stay at it.” I can’t say this was advice I personally received since it was part of an Obama speech, but it’s advice that strongly resonates with me.
3. What’s something about you that most people wouldn’t know?
I love throwing dinner parties and tend to go way overboard with foraging fresh greenery and flowers for the table, mixing new playlists, setting up a full bar with a specialty cocktail, etc.
4. What’s your favourite destination around the globe that you’ve visited?
In all honesty, New Orleans has my heart. It’s not just because it’s home, but it’s the buzz in the air, the culture, the architecture, the colours, the crazy traditions, the loud music and the warmth of the people. I could go on and on. Runner up would probably be rural Italy. I love those quiet little Tuscan towns.
5. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I tend to fill my free time with travel. I’ve always been more of a city girl, but lately I’ve been enjoying a lot of camping and beach excursions. In smaller chunks of time, I’m usually up for a trip to the museum, park, café, or hanging anywhere with friends.
6. You’re a new addition to a crayon box. What colour would you be and why?
Probably some kind of fleshy skin tone with an olive tint. I’m very literal.
7. Cats or dogs?
Koalas.
8. Least favourite food?
Raw onions, especially when I don’t see them coming.
9. Any epic TV series on the go that we should know about?
I’m not really a TV person, but I love podcasts and can’t get enough of the storytelling on The Moth.
10. What’s your favourite tune at the moment?
Runnin Thru My Dreams, by Sunny Levine
