Today I’m in Mount Macedon and this home has me wondering if we all had five bedrooms an in ground pool, over 10 acres of property, a billiards room, and your own lake, would you ever in fact leave the comfort of your own home? Lord knows I can’t answer that question, it’s purely rhetorical, but what I can do is show you inside so you can take a look for yourself and you decide. Sound good? Of course it does, let’s do it.
If I was to describe this home to you I would say it was like a modern remake of the Man From Snowy River and the main character would definitely be played by Hugh Jackman. I mean it’s Australian, it’s rough, it’s tough, but it’s also incredibly handsome and has a touch of glamour. Aw, Hugh Jackman.
So this house is in the Macedon ranges and I’ve got to admit I’m not a Victorian native so if anyone mentions anything to me that’s not in like a 10 kilometre radius of the CBD, I kind of don’t exactly know where it is, but I’ve got to admit, coming here, it didn’t take us long to get here from the city and we had just fully fledged in country mode. I mean it is just incredible here, it is so beautiful, it’s so peaceful and can you hear that?
Exactly. Nothing. You can’t hear anything, it’s so peaceful. It’s so, so quiet. The only thing you can hear are the birds in the trees. The owner of this property absolutely loves this area. He grew up in Bacchus Marsh and he’s always loved the Macedon ranges and I can kind of see why. Back in the day this used to be a homestead for the horse stud across the road and when the owner saw this property he absolutely fell in love with it purely because of its location.
It looks out over onto Mount Macedon, it’s north facing and you’re really kind of sunken in this beautiful valley and you’re just surrounded by this mountainous landscape. I’ve got to say, it is incredibly breathtaking. This was a new build and the owner, because he very much loved the landscape, he wanted to make sure that whatever he built really reflected everything that was going on in the Australian landscape so materials were incredibly, incredibly important to him.
He wanted to make sure that it really felt part of the environment. That stone wall is just spectacular and it took over a year to complete. They’re hand laid and they run through the entire central spine of the home. They really do help to make it this incredibly cosy, warm home, but at the same time, I mean it’s such a strong material as well. So there’s an incredible strength to it. With that as well, there’s an awful lot of timber and it’s insanely beautiful, that ironbark which is hard to work with, it is incredible durable, and with that also, copper. I mean the copper you see throughout is with the fireplace, it’s in the hallway.
Again, copper itself, I mean it’s a strong material, but it brings a certain level of softness as well. It brings a nice level of delicacy to the interior, which warms it up as well. I mean, this is a really large size home but it’s been designed incredibly well. The way that it’s been laid out has been, I guess, it’s almost a crucifix form, I mean it has been commonly referred to as the cruciform house and on one side of the house you have the living, dining sort of area. In the central hub is really a place for everybody to meet and have that kind of space and those living areas that leads onto your outdoor entertaining.
The sleeping quarters or the sleeping wing I should say, is really well laid out. It’s just a really good use of space and it leads you to the very end, that incredible master bedroom and that awesome, awesome bathroom. The pool, the outdoor entertaining, the multiple living areas, the billiards room, I mean there is so much fun that can be had in this home and then there are so many different spaces.
I imagine it would be a good home to be with your kids, especially if you didn’t really want to see your kids, you could kind of just shut the door or let them hang out downstairs and you can be upstairs. There’s just a lot of different room for a family to either choose to interact or not. It’s not just the house itself that’s really impressive but it’s the overall experience you actually feel when you get to visit this property. I mean the driveway alone is spectacular, it’s curved, it’s windy, it takes you through this beautiful gardens, this incredible acreage. This home is huge, it’s grand, but it’s not grandiose. If anything, it really compliments the vast, mountainous, epic landscape that is Mount Macedon.
