I have a very special house for you today. We’re going to be taking a look through the High House. It’s a beautiful terrace home which is only five metres wide, but you have no idea how big this baby is from the inside. Let’s go take a look.
First of all, this house is insta famous. You know when you see someone in the street and you feel like you know them but you’re not sure you’ve actually met or if you’ve just stalked them on Instagram? That’s kind of the way I feel about coming to this house because I had literally loved it so much through photos on Instagram. I was a little bit starstruck walking in here. I was completely, completely surprised because at the front, it’s just a typical beautiful terrace house in the middle of Melbourne, it’s all traditional, and then all of a sudden you walk in and it’s just like, pow! Party at the back. Traditional at front, party at the back, and I love it.
It’s only five metres wide. Five metres wide? The way that they’ve done that? Pitched roof. There is so much height, it just keeps going up and up and up, which gives you so much light. There’s beautiful clever detailing everywhere you look, there’s amazing storage spaces everywhere and the skylights are super important. They’re strategically placed, they’re bringing in a lot of light, and it just makes it feel a lot bigger than it is.
“I love, love, love, love the colour in this home. It’s so rare to see colour used like this in people’s homes. There’s just incredible playful nature. They’ve had a lot of fun, with pops of blues, pastel pinks, it has energy. As soon as you walk in here, it just feels like you’re happy to be here because there is life in this home, and it’s evident.”
There’s a lot of beautiful soft colours in here but they’re also balanced with amazing masculine tones as well. There’s heavy concrete, there’s beautiful steel features, there’s black highlights throughout, which kind of grounds it a little bit. There’s beautiful plywood but there’s lots of different timber as well. It’s just got an incredible balance to it. They haven’t overdone anything. Everything seems to just work in perfect harmony with each other which I think is a challenge, especially when you’re introducing different colours and textures like this home does. I think they’ve done it incredibly well.
What I love as well is that there’s just so many places to sit and be and move, and it’s very functional. You can tell that they have literally made use of every single surface area in this home, and mind you, it’s small, so that’s exactly what they wanted to do. They wanted to make it as big as possible and as functional as possible, and I think they’ve really achieved that.
“The stairs are incredibly beautiful. I reckon I can probably just sit there and chill. I can see myself on a Friday night with a glass of wine in my hand, chatting and watching the goings on in the kitchen and living. I like that, I really like how everything’s kind of integrated. Because it is small, you can sort of be in one area but still feel like you’re open to the rest of the space.”
The owner of this house is actually the designer of this house, so you can tell there’s just a lot of love and attention to detail that’s gone into the design. To the point where theres beautiful alignment. You can tell things are strategically aligned so that everything falls in as one and it’s perfectly balanced.
This house is called the High House for a reason. It is super high, it brings in so much light, it utilises every single piece of space available to it and it feels way bigger than it actually is. What I love most, is it’s filled with personality, it’s filled with love, and it feels just like a really happy home.
