The design of this Sydney home is a juxtaposition of old and new. The goal was to create an updated family home that would not take away from the heritage feel, but stand strong as its own entity. Luckily, the team were able to find a way to both respects the past and create something new – creative yet respectful of tradition. The result is Iron Cove House, a home that is able to accommodate a large extended family while still maintaining many of the property’s heritage elements.
In order for Iron Cove House to live up to its name, Luke Moloney Architecture needed to create spaces that were modern yet respectful of heritage. In addition to being luxurious, they wanted the house to have an inviting atmosphere that would be comfortable for friends and their large extended family to enjoy.
Since the building is located in a conservation area, the changes to the street elevation are subtle, preserving the character of the neighbourhood while also respecting the historic features of the building. A classic colour scheme and careful restoration of the original timber detailing on the verandah are among the designs that form a ‘just enough’ aesthetic.
New living, dining, and kitchen spaces replace ramshackle additions at the rear of the two houses, creating an open, airy indoor space that is surrounded on three sides by the large garden. The interior spaces are modern and spacious with careful consideration given to how each space flows into another.
Designing a home that could accommodate friends and family was at the core of the design process. This has been addressed by a space that opens to a garden, complete with a pool and covered areas for indoor/outdoor entertaining.
The design of this Sydney home is a beautiful combination of old and new. It embraces the heritage feel, but wouldn’t be complete without its own personality as well. The team successfully incorporated modern finishes, while keeping in mind the building’s historic significance. A perfect example of how modern meets traditional.
