Yep, this post is about a house without a single photo of said house. The Fairfield House is a recipient of 2 prestigious awards in the 2016 Houses Awards for the outdoor category and another for sustainability. The house is the work of Kennedy Nolan in collaboration with Sam Cox Landscape.
This steep bush block on the banks of the Yarra River in Fairfield, an inner city Melbourne suburb, has been sectioned into a number of usable and considered native gardens. This project is an exemplar for all the community – it advocates an approach to design and the environment that is accessible, it embraces an attitude that is distinctly Australian. The riverbanks have been stabilized and the fauna returned to a familiar and safe environment. The garden is watered naturally when it rains and the pool is serviced by solar tubing and power offset by photovoltaic cells. Native gardens in the Australian natural style pioneered by Ellis ‘Rocky’ Stones and Gordon Ford. Using soft edges, boulder outcrops, natural ponds and native plants, Sam continually works toward advancing the tradition of the natural garden in Australia.
