Door Reinvented – Klemens Torggler

Every now and then you see things in design that go beyond simply ‘pushing the boundaries’ and instead reinvent their own language that in turn make those old boundaries appear remarkably distant and incredibly boring. This latest creation from Austrian artist Klemens Torggler is truly breath-taking. Using four triangular sections within the form of a rectangle, they pivot, collapse, rotate and then straighten to form their original rectangular shape. This beautiful rectangle moves sideways in order to open and close the door.

Torggler calls the system Drehplattentür, which translates as the “flip panel door”. The artist, based in Vienna, has been working on the concept for a number of years with a series of distinct iterations. He has also experimented with different materials and textures.
