On the back of a 1968 Dodge D5N truck is a surprisingly spacious one-bedroom home. Unlike most motor homes this unique cedar house is a permanent and plush residence with no fixed address. For now, home is Connewarre on Victoria’s surf coast but as for five years from now anything is possible. Inspired by other truck houses and caravans, owner Lachie knew that one day he would create his own and began planning years before realising his dream. Lachie takes us on a closer look around…
The house rests not just on the back of the truck but cantilevered over the cab where a queen bedroom hovers above. The exterior features cedar cladding with cedar strapping on top. Lachie approached his material choice with an open mind and a slim wallet, finding affordable cedar and sourcing windows from online marketplaces. Working in the building industry Lachie was able to utilise leftover materials from building sites. The roof was salvaged from a demolition and the floor was the original floor inside the truck. Merging new with old – Lachie insists there was no real rhyme or reason in his material selection but his underlying understanding of design and what materials will work cohesively together inevitably resulted in a harmonious finish.
This TRUCK HOUSE is one of twenty four unique homes featured in my new book, RETREAT: Inspired Homes and Ways of Living. Get your copy to see more of this home, and many others, in more detail.
