It’s definitely not every day that we get to see a house with the luxury of a private tennis court, don’t we? Located in an exclusive suburb in Ascot, Queensland, the Centre Court House designed by Refresh Design features a renovation of a dated extension from the early 90s that opens the house to the tennis court towards the north and the pool area to the east. “Modernised and reorganised ground floor living areas with a centrally located kitchen facilitate contemporary subtropical living in the ground floor, with large bi-folds allowing for ample natural ventilation. At the same time, the large overhang of the upper floor veranda shades the living areas. A feature stair is placed into the large light well, which becomes the ‘heart’ of the house providing a strong sense of light, air and space to the house.” – Refresh Design
The space was spatially generous and expansive however, the existing 90s layout was in need of some serious attention. There were some oddities from the previous renovation, but the bones were always good. The approach was to simplify and streamline, to create a feeling of freshness, openness and light. By making substantial tweaks, they were able to improve the functionality of the spaces within their existing general layouts.
Approaching the project with a consistent material and colour palette provides continuity throughout the home. Working with a limited base palette reduces the visual clutter and allows the selected features to stand out against a more subdued backdrop. Timber cladding is widely used throughout the home, creating a homey ambiance of earthy texture throughout the new spatial features that blend harmoniously with the existing structure.
