Go inside an Interior Designer’s Own Home that showcases modern Australian luxury at its finest. Tucked away behind a heritage Victorian home, Hidden House stays true to its name—concealed from the street, only revealing itself as you step inside. This carefully considered extension is home to Meredith Nettleton of Studio MKN who collaborated with Eliza Blair Architecture to realise her unique vision for her home – merging glass, concrete and timber into a modern, light-filled retreat, balancing old and new with ease. Watch our Let Us In of the Hidden House below, proudly supported by CDK Stone.
Designed for a family of four, the home was crafted to feel both private and open—connected yet independent. The original Victorian façade remains untouched, while the new single-storey addition extends into the garden, completely hidden from passersby. The result? A seamless blend of heritage charm and contemporary design, proving that great architecture isn’t about making a statement—it’s about creating spaces that work effortlessly for the people who live in them.
Step through the home and you’ll find yourself in a modern pavilion, where floor-to-ceiling glazed walls blur the boundaries between inside and out. The design embraces the natural slope of the site, with the rear living space cantilevering into the garden, making you feel as if you’re floating above the greenery.
The standout feature? Custom timber slat screens that pivot across the glazed façade. These clever screens aren’t just for looks—they shield the home from the Western sun while offering privacy when needed. They also create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, changing throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky.
With interiors by the homeowner Studio MKN, the home balances minimalism with warmth, layering textures and materials to create a timeless, sophisticated feel. A soft neutral palette sets the tone, allowing the natural materials to take centre stage.
Light timber floorboards add warmth underfoot and the rich walnut and Blackbutt timber joinery, bring depth and contrast. In the kitchen, the Fior Di Pesco marble island bench creates a subtle yet striking focal point, while the concrete fireplace ties into the home’s raw, natural aesthetic. Skylights and oversized windows flood the interiors with natural light, ensuring that every space feels bright, open, and connected to the outdoors.
More than just a beautiful home, Hidden House is designed to be functional, flexible, and liveable. The layout is crafted for everyday use, with no wasted space—just considered design that enhances daily life. Although it sits in the heart of inner Melbourne, this home feels calm, secluded, and effortlessly connected to nature. Thoughtful landscaping by Mud Office wraps the home in greenery, making it feel like a private retreat, while every element—from the glazed façade to the custom timber screens—ensures the house adapts to its surroundings.
Sometimes, the best design is the kind you don’t even notice—it just feels right. Hidden House is exactly that: a home that doesn’t shout for attention but instead reveals its brilliance slowly, inviting you to experience it one moment at a time.
