Originally built as a bank in 1905, The Bowmont is known as ‘Federation Free Style’ in its design. An architectural term used to describe commercial buildings that adapted the Federation style of residential homes to larger buildings, without being constrained by rules or classical elements.
Set beside the Huon River in Franklin, the oldest township in Tasmania’s Huon Valley. This heritage building has experienced many faces over the years, first a bank, then a maternity hospital – becoming the birthplace for roughly 3000 babies in the late 40s to the 60s. The old delivery room is now the kitchen, while the cold security of the former bank vault has become the perfect pantry. The late 90s saw the building turn into government offices which led to less desirable features such as fluorescent lights littered across the ceiling. After a few short-lived tenants and years of neglect, in 2019 it took on a new life as a much-loved family home.
Stories and history ooze from every surface. The old banking chamber, now called the ‘big room’ celebrates soaring ceilings, hardwood timber windows and an open fire. What was once the place for queues and cheques, is now the perfect event space for hosting gatherings or an intimate evening with family, enjoying the goodness that is often cooked up on the black Aga stove. Lovingly restored, each room honours its heritage and brings to life details from the past. Colours, patterns, fabrics, furniture and decor have been lovingly chosen and generously layered, creating an intoxicating interior of rich vintage perfection.
This Heritage Home is one of twenty four unique homes featured in my new book, RETREAT: Inspired Homes and Ways of Living. Get your copy to see more of this home, and many others, in more detail.
