This uncomplicated home which used to be an outdated mid-century home located in a very steep sloping block of land in Melbourne was overdue for a much-needed renovation. Owned by expat-Canadians who have made Australia their home, the Mid Century Revival by Detail 9 Architects was a four-way collaboration with the ultimate goal of improving the livability for a growing family. Let’s take a closer look!
“Our clients are expat-Canadians, who have made Australia their home. They were passionate about the mid-century style of their home and became experts in mid-century modern renovation and furnishing. We developed a lovely relationship with our clients, their hands-on involvement and a keen eye for detail were a real asset to the project.” – Detail 9 Architects
Together with Secret Design Studio, Balwyn Builders and the clients, Detail 9 Architects has been able to take this reno project to a whole new level. Secret Design Studio provided their mid-century expertise to get the project underway; Balwyn Builders made the construction progress smoothly, and the clients were very passionate about the mid-century style of their home and became experts in mid-century modern renovation and furnishing.
The character of the house is portrayed in the detail of each room. The living room is artsy and very contemporary; the bedroom feels quaint, bright and light; the kitchen features a very relaxing and homely feel with pops of greenery while at the same time being functional and refined. The entire house was cleverly designed, with natural light filling up the spaces to make them even more inviting.
The brief was to create a convenient entry to the home, improve the livability for a growing family including guest accommodation, improve and expand the outdoor entertaining space, and connectivity to the pool. The goal was for these changes to reflect modern family life, whilst retaining the character of the architecture.
“The site provided quite the challenge, it has beautiful sweeping views across the outer east of Melbourne, however, it is very steep. The house also had several entry points, however no real sense of a focal point ‘front door’. One of the key goals was to improve access from the driveway to a formal front entry. More living space for growing children and guest accommodation for overseas visitors were also on the wish list.” – Detail 9 Architects
This project by Detail 9 Architects is the perfect example of how modern meets traditional. The result was a unique reinvention of the seemingly modest house.
