A growing family does just that, it grows! And in the case of the Loft House, the original cottage proved to be just too tight and dark for its owners who were craving new spaces for their family to grow and cement memories in. Enter Tom Robertson Architects the Melbourne based architect behind this beautiful modern renovation who made their wish come true.
Clean and light are two things that come to mind when we look through this home. If like me you spend day and night trawling through Homes online trying to find the perfect inspiration… then the Loft House is bound to give you those dream home feels.
This new addition creates a larger home with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a spacious study and multiple garden areas.
The previous living areas were cramped and dark, unsuitable for a growing family. To combat this the renovation features a clean, minimal palette to enhance the feeling of scale. When it came to the selection of material and colour palettes Tom Robertson chose to subtly reference the home’s heritage origins while maintaining a clean minimalist interior. Internal brick walls are painted white in continuity with the monochrome colour palette and recall the brick walls of traditional cottages.
Windows are strategically placed to opens the home to the courtyard and surrounding garden. In the living area, glass forms an elegant separation between the ceiling planes and internal walls, creating a sense of lightness and space.
My obsession for exposed brick went into over drive when I first saw the Loft house. Its Brick walls painted white are subtly exposed around the interior walls, which helps to continue the monochromatic aesthetic of the home whilst also reflecting back on the history of the original cottage.
In the bathroom, the texture of the white tiling is again reminiscent of brick, contributing a contemporary take on traditional materials.
The hero of the Loft House is definitely its use of space and light, but the clever choice of materials is what lifts it to dream home status. For a family that was looking to create more memories, they certainly have a more than incredible stage now in which to do so!
